THE MONACO GRAND PRIX LIBRARY BY ROY HULSBERGEN

43th GP - 1985

19th May - 78 laps of 3.312km -  258.336 km

Practice: Rumours were that the FISA were considering to exclude Monaco from the world championship because of its awkward cicuit.
But luckily commercial aspects made them decide for Monaco.
The McLaren cars were the most suited for this circcuit.
Tyre technology advanced and now tyres were electrically pre-heated.
These blankets though set Senna’s tyres on fire minutes before the start.

Race

Senna on cold tyres was well away followed by Mansell. Berger’s Arrows stalled right at the start and Tambay and Johansson collided into him and all three were out of race at the start.
Alboreto soon passed Mansell and started threatening Senna. And in lap 10 the Renault engine blew up giving Alboreto the lead, with much cheering from the Ferrari supporters. Prost in second place while Mansell fell back.
Alboretto in lap 17 skidded in the Ste-Devote took the escape road and lost 15 seconds, so Prost in the lead. In the same lap Piquet and Patrese get in each other’s wheels just before the Ste-Devote, a lot of noise, flames a wheel flying off and two more cars were wrecked. It left a lot of oil on the track, which did not help Alboreto to catch up with Prost. Next Lauda skidded and stalled.

Ferrari of Johansson

After half way the Ferrari had a puncture, rushed into the pits to come out in fourth position. Prost still in the lead followed by de Angelis and de Cesaris. But Alboreto had not given up, first the Ligier and in lap 63 the Lotus and back into 2nd place. Gaining little by little on the McLaren, but the chequered flag put an end to it and Prost won his second Monaco GP.
