Race Prost and Schumacher sped off, but Senna, even with his sore thumb, stayed close behind. Apparently Prost had started too early and was given a stop and go penalty, which he took in lap 12. Prost lost it all when his engine stalled in the pitlane and found himself as a tail ender.
Schumacher was then in the lead ahead of Senna and the rest of the field. In lap 33 suspension hydraulics problems forced Schumacher out of the race and Senna slid into the leading position with a 15 second advance on Hill.
The main entertainment was provided by Prost as he climbed up the field despite difficult overtaking at the Monaco street circuit. It was time for the stops with no changes in the top 6 but Prost was the big gainer as he climbed from 10th to 7th. This became 6th and into the points when Patrese's engine failed on lap 54. Prost passed Fittipaldi for fifth soon after.
Senna would not give this position away and drove all the way to the end.
On lap 71, Berger attacked Hill and there was contact. Hill rejoined but Berger was out immediately. Senna won from Hill, Alesi, Prost, Fittipaldi and Brundle. Ayrton Senna took a record sixth Monaco Grand Prix victory after driving a clever tactical race. The Brazilian made the maximum use of his relatively uncompetitive McLaren-Ford to win after Alain Prost jumped the start and then stalled in the pits during his 10 second stop and go penalty. Michael Schumacher led comfortably until a hydraulics failure on lap 32 left him out of the race handing the victory to Senna.
